What are Strandbeests? Strandbeests are made of lightweight PVC tubes powered completely by wing-like sails that drive their feet in a dreamlike motion. These amazing creatures will be roaming around Ipswich and Boston in late August in a series of pop-up events created by Dutch artist Theo Jansen. In September, the Peabody Essex Museum will host the first major American exhibition of Jansen’s strandbeests, with the original artist sketches, the methodology behind these beautiful creations and live demonstrations.
